HEMORRHOIDS (PILES)

Hemorrhoids may sound like just a minor thing to you if you have not had a first hand experience. Before we go further, let’s look at these questions from two hemorrhoid patients.

Patient A: I’ve been suffering from hemorrhoids for the past 15 years. Every time I go to the loo, it’s painful whether my stool is loose or hard. Most of the time, it’s bleeding more especially if my stool is hard or I have diarrhea. I’ve used all kinds of medications butot’s not getting better. I can’t get a job because of this problem. I’m suffering! I booked for surgery a couple of times but the doctors told me that there’s nothing to operate on. I’ve got internal and external hemorrhoids. Will I ever get help or must I admit that I’m going to die with this problem?

Patient B: I have been having hemorrhoids but it was nothing extreme. All of a sudden, this year, they started bleeding like crazy. Emergency has sent me home with some ointments but they don’t really help like that. I want my whole ass cut out ‘cause it’s painful. I’ve not been able to sit, drive or do anything for days. Do I need to go for surgery?

About Hemorrhoids (Piles)

Hemorrhoids, also known as piles, are inflamed, swollen veins that surround your anus or the lowest section of your rectum. They can cause pain and rectal bleeding. Piles may grow behind the skin around your anus (external hemorrhoids) or occur in the anus and lower rectum lining (internal hemorrhoids).

Causes Of Hemorrhoids

Hemorrhoids form when the veins around the anus are under too much strain. This might be due to:

  • Lack of fiber diet
  • Straining during bowel motions
  • Sitting for a long period of time on the toilet
  • Lifting heavy objects on a regular basis
  • Frequent constipation or diarrhea
  • Weak anus and rectum’s supporting tissues which can occur as a result of age and pregnancy.

Symptoms Of Hemorrhoids

The symptoms of hemorrhoids depends on the type (external or internal)

External hemorrhoids usually come with the following symptoms

  • one or more painful, firm bumps around your anus
  • Itching in the anal region
  • Anal soreness, particularly while sitting

For external piles, sitting or too much rubbing against any surface may worsen your symptoms. In some people, the symptoms may disappear within a few days.

Internal hemorrhoids are accompanied by the following symptoms

  • Bleeding from the rectum
  • Prolapse (a hemorrhage that has passed through your anal opening).

Usually, internal hemorrhoids are not painful but prolapsed internal hemorrhoids can be painful.

The hemorrhoids grading system and treatment method

Grade 1

The hemorrhoid enters the anal canal but does not prolapse outside of the anus. Treatment plans usually include fiber diet and over-the-counter hemorrhoid treatment.

Grade 2

During straining or straining, the hemorrhoid protrudes through the anus but immediately reduces on its own. Conservative treatment methods, starting from grade 1 hemorrhoid treatments are often applied for grade 2 hemorrhoid patients. These treatments include: injection sclerotherapy, rubber band ligation, or infrared coagulation.

Grade 3

During straining or evacuation, a hemorrhoid protrudes through the anus and must be reduced manually.

Grade 4

When a hemorrhoid protrudes through the anus during straining, it does not reduce on its own and cannot be reduced manually.

Grade 3 and 4 hemorrhoids often require surgical operation. Surgical hemorrhoid excision and surgical hemorrhoid stapling are the two most common surgical hemorrhoid therapies.
