Prostate issues have got to be one major thing that scares even the strongest man just at the mention of it. Some years ago, my uncle came back home feeling dejected. His long-time friend had developed prostate cancer and was battling for his life. Looking at my uncle, you could tell he was scared to the marrow. He was unsure of what would become of his friend. He was told that his friend might not make it and that really pierced him. The truth is, as a man, you might end up living your life in fear of having prostate problems especially if you know or you have someone who has suffered from it before.
Speaking with the MD/CEO of Fekomi global limited, the parent company of Fekomi Herbals in a recent interview, Mr Adefemi Komiyo Lawrence related the fear men go through when it comes to the topic of prostate issues. He assured that although prostate issues are a matter of concern, there are a lot of things that can be done to remedy them.
Taking us through the meaning of the prostate, He described it as a small gland (the size of a walnut) in the male reproductive system that is responsible for producing seminal fluid. He explained that the prostate, which is situated just beneath the bladder in front of the rectum, wraps around the urethra and grows larger with age and it becomes a problem if it gets too large as it can cause a number of health issues stating this as the reason men in their fifties tend to be at higher risk of having prostate issues.
Mr. Adefemi went on further to list the common types of prostate problems as benign prostatic hyperplasia, prostatitis (inflammation), and prostate cancer, noting that having one type does not increase the risk of having the others.
Describing Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) as being the most common type of prostate problem, he said, “According to research, over 50% of men aged 50 to 60 and about 90% of men above the age of 80 are affected by benign prostatic hyperplasia. However, it is important to know that contrary to the myths flying around, BPH is not in any way cancerous.”
Speaking on the second type of prostate issues, the CEO said prostatitis is an inflammation of the prostate gland caused by a bacterial infection that may be acute or chronic, and just like the BPH, it’s noncancerous. According to him, more than half of all men have prostatitis at one point in their lifetime.
How common is prostate cancer in Nigeria? An increased incidence of prostate cancer among Nigeria men, (now the second most common cause of cancer death). A study revived male cancer patients recorded in Nigeria’s cancer registry assesses the current trend in prostate cancer in Nigeria. Several reports show that prostate cancer remains the number in Nigeria among men and constitutes 11% of all male cancer. The number of prostate cancer cases has increased and continues to grow as a result of Nigerians’ lifestyle one of the factors that probably contribute to a varying degree among our Nigerian population. Nigerian men are generally of average build or in the low-normal range of body mass index.
On prostate cancer, he stated that the chances of a man getting prostate cancer may be affected by age, race, family history, and diet. He further stressed that men should not joke with regular medical checkups adding that they should seek immediate medical help if there are any symptoms like frequent urination, blood in urine or semen, painful ejaculation, burning or stinging sensation during urination, frequent pain in the lower back, hips, upper thighs, pelvic or rectal area among other symptoms.
When asked about the type of treatment that can be adopted, Mr. Adefemi admitted that treatment varies depending on the type of prostate issues and may sometimes require radiation therapy, surgery, or even chemotherapy for advanced prostate cancer. He however said that in a bid to profer a solution to the pains men suffer from prostate problems, his herbal company, Fekomi Herbals carried out adequate research and came up with a herbal remedy for prostate issues which has received positive feedback from clients across the globe.
